Marathon Game Director Leaves Bungie At A Tumultuous Time

Marathon game director Joe Ziegler has announced his departure from Bungie, effective July 17, 2026. Ziegler, who joined the studio in December 2022 from a 12-year tenure at Riot Games, led development of the extraction shooter but is now moving to an unspecified new opportunity.

Ziegler’s departure marks another leadership change at a studio experiencing significant turbulence. The timing is particularly notable given that Marathon launched just four months earlier, in March 2026, and has struggled to build a substantial player base. Bungie has endured a difficult year overall: the studio recently ended development on Destiny 2, and Sony announced layoffs affecting “a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members.”

Del Chafe III, a 15-year Bungie veteran who previously worked on Destiny, will assume the game director role. Chafe III has served as assistant game director on Marathon since April 2024 and will guide the game’s future alongside creative director Julia Nardin. In his departure statement, Ziegler expressed confidence in his successors, stating both “have been operating in a strong leadership capacity for the team and are ready to guide Marathon into the next chapter with an even better and brighter future.” Ziegler thanked the community for supporting Marathon’s launch and expressed optimism that the mission would “continue in new and surprising ways,” though the developer has not disclosed specific plans for the live service’s future.
