Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Dev Is Tired Of People Calling Gunny An AI Chatbot

Infinity Ward has pushed back against claims that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s new Gunsmith assistant Gunny is powered by artificial intelligence. After retired leaker TheGhostOfHope sparked speculation by labeling the feature as an AI chatbot, the studio firmly denied the assertion, stating that Gunny is “hand-crafted” by Infinity Ward developers rather than an AI system.

Gunny is a loadout recommendation tool integrated into Modern Warfare 4’s Gunsmith system. The feature helps players quickly create weapon builds tailored to their playstyle and available attachments. Players can use it to instantly generate close-range, mid-range, or long-range weapon configurations optimized for different combat scenarios. According to Activision, Gunny “brings a Gunnery Sergeant’s eye to weapon customization,” drawing on loadout recommendations developed by the studio’s Weapons Team.

The feature was designed to streamline the increasingly complex Gunsmith system found in recent Call of Duty titles. Rather than manually configuring each attachment, players can now rely on Gunny’s pre-built recommendations to create effective loadouts between matches.

While Infinity Ward has clarified that Gunny itself is developer-crafted rather than AI-generated, the studio has acknowledged using AI tools elsewhere in its development process. In response to questions about AI implementation, a representative stated: “We use whatever tools we have to enhance and help our developers to complete [tasks] on time.” This suggests the studio employs AI as a general development aid, though not specifically for Gunny’s functionality.

The controversy highlights ongoing industry sensitivity around AI implementation in game development, with players and industry observers increasingly scrutinizing new features for potential AI involvement.
