Overwatch’s attempt at bringing back 6v6 feels like a bad compromise—it just doesn’t work

Overwatch continues its contentious relationship with its player base over game format preferences. When Blizzard introduced the 5v5 format in 2022, it sparked significant backlash from players nostalgic for the original 6v6 setup. While the developer added a 6v6 open queue mode as an alternative, they have not stopped searching for a solution that bridges player preferences.

The newest attempt is a modified 6v6 format being tested in the Quickplay Hacked Event, Blizzard’s limited-time experimental mode for gathering community feedback. This latest compromise represents Team 4’s continued effort to find a middle ground satisfying both those preferring 5v5’s faster pace and those favoring 6v6’s traditional team composition.

By testing changes through temporary experimental modes, Blizzard takes a measured approach to a fundamental design challenge—modifying core game formats inevitably alienates portions of the player base. Overwatch’s ongoing format debate exemplifies the tension between developer innovation and player preferences in competitive multiplayer games.
