New Report Reveals Original Plans For Ryse 2 And Why We Never Got A Sequel

A newly released report has revealed that Crytek had ambitious plans for a Ryse sequel that never came to fruition. According to the report, developers were particularly enthusiastic about taking the franchise in a fresh direction with a Viking-themed installment, with one developer noting they were “super stoked to do a Viking game.”

Ryse: Son of Rome, which launched as an Xbox One exclusive, became one of the most memorable titles of that console generation despite mixed critical reception. The game’s fast-paced hack-and-slash gameplay and impressive visuals earned it a devoted fanbase, with its graphics still holding up favorably compared to modern releases.

However, despite the game’s legacy and original creative ambitions for a sequel, Ryse 2 never materialized. When asked about the absence of a follow-up in 2018, former Xbox boss Phil Spencer offered little clarity, simply stating that “there’s never an easy answer to why something didn’t happen” and expressing that he personally enjoyed the original title.

The newly surfaced report provides more concrete insight into what might have been, documenting the early development concepts and direction that Crytek envisioned for the franchise. The revelation of these unused plans offers fans a glimpse into unrealized gaming history and raises questions about the business decisions that led to the sequel’s cancellation.
