“I would fight it tooth and nail”: The Sims artist would challenge any mandate to reduce diversity after EA Saudi buyout

EA’s $56 billion acquisition by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners has raised concerns about potential pressure on The Sims to reduce diversity representation. The deal, announced in September, will see the investor group take 100% ownership of EA, which develops major franchises including Battlefield, EA FC, and The Sims.

Addressing these concerns, Jess Hyland, a senior character artist at The Sims studio, stated she has not “heard anything” about mandates to reduce diversity support. Should any such directive be introduced, Hyland said she would actively resist, declaring she would “fight it tooth and nail.”

The comments reflect broader concerns within the gaming industry about foreign investment and its potential impact on creative decisions. The Sims franchise has emphasized diverse character options and customization in recent years, allowing players to create characters reflecting various backgrounds, identities, and expressions. Hyland’s statement suggests that The Sims team remains committed to maintaining its current approach to diversity and inclusivity.
