Labor unions challenge Xbox, GameStop CEO says physical game sales are ‘irrelevant,’ and Glen Schofield retires - Patch Notes #61

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) and CWA Canada have filed unfair labor practice complaints against Microsoft with the US National Labor Relations Board, challenging the company’s handling of mass layoffs at Xbox. The unions allege that Microsoft mishandled the recent job cuts and engaged in illegal labor practices during the process.

According to the complaints, Microsoft failed to provide necessary information to the CWA and engaged in bad faith bargaining with the union. The company is also accused of engaging in “coercive actions” against employees and unlawfully modifying employee contracts. The unions specifically accuse Microsoft of “unlawfully firing people” as part of the layoff process.

These legal challenges represent the latest escalation in labor tensions at Microsoft following thousands of job cuts across the Xbox division. The CWA has signaled its commitment to continued legal action, stating they will continue filing additional challenges if necessary. This marks a significant pushback from organized labor against mass layoffs affecting the gaming industry, as workers seek accountability for what they view as improper employment practices.
