Gears of War’s creator is considering returning to game development, but whatever he makes won’t be PvP like his last efforts: “Good look to anyone in that space.”
Cliff Bleszinski, renowned for creating the Gears of War franchise, is considering a return to full-time game development after an eight-year hiatus from the industry. The legendary developer left gaming in 2018 following the closure of his studio, Boss Key Productions, which he founded after his departure from Epic Games.
Boss Key Productions’ closure was precipitated by the commercial failure of two games: LawBreakers, a multiplayer arena shooter, and Radical Heights, an 80s-themed battle royale title. At the time of the studio’s shutdown, Bleszinski publicly stated he was done with game development permanently.
However, in a recent interview with 80 Level, Bleszinski revealed he is now reconsidering his position and exploring a potential return to the industry. The creator emphasized that any future projects would not follow the multiplayer player-versus-player model that characterized his most recent work. When discussing the current PvP space, Bleszinski offered a dismissive comment: “Good luck to anyone in that space,” suggesting frustration with the competitive multiplayer landscape that contributed to his previous ventures’ commercial struggles.
This potential return marks a significant shift for Bleszinski, who had seemingly turned his back on game development entirely. While he has remained visible in gaming discourse and culture since leaving the industry, he has not actively developed games for nearly a decade.
