Marathon director Joe Ziegler leaves Bungie just four months after launch
Marathon director Joe Ziegler has departed Bungie after three and a half years with the studio. Ziegler announced on July 17th that his final day had come, roughly four months after the launch of Marathon, Bungie’s live-service competitive shooter.
Ziegler handed over directorial duties to co-directors Del Chafe III and Julia Nardin, both of whom have been serving in senior leadership roles on the Marathon team. In his announcement, Ziegler expressed confidence in their readiness, stating they “have been operating in a strong leadership capacity for the team and are ready to guide Marathon into the next chapter with an even better and brighter future.”
The director’s departure comes during a challenging period for Bungie, which recently underwent significant layoffs. Despite the difficult circumstances, Ziegler framed his exit positively, emphasizing his pride in the co-directors and excitement about the game’s future under their leadership. The transition marks a continued evolution for Marathon as the live-service title progresses through its post-launch phase.
