Brandon Sanderson’s Blightful returns to the Cytoverse — read an exclusive excerpt

Brandon Sanderson’s Cytoverse universe is expanding across multiple media formats. A television pilot for Skyward, the first book in Sanderson’s YA science fiction series about teen pilots fighting aliens, is in early development at Tomorrow Studios, the production company behind Netflix’s live-action One Piece adaptation.

Simultaneously, Sanderson is launching a new trilogy within the Cytoverse starting in September. Titled Blightfall and co-written with Janci Patterson, the trilogy is set decades after the events of the original book series. This marks the second collaboration between Sanderson and Patterson, who previously worked together on Skyward Flight, a novella trilogy bridging events between Sanderson’s 2019 novel Starsight and 2021’s Cytonic. The new trilogy introduces fresh characters while expanding the established universe. Polygon has secured an exclusive first look at the opening excerpt from Blightfall, offering fans an early preview of the story before its September release.
