District 9 Director Neill Blomkamp Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Zombie Short Film

Renowned science fiction director Neill Blomkamp has released “NIGHTBORNE,” a 13-minute AI-generated short film to YouTube on July 19, marking his first full test film created entirely with artificial intelligence technology. The film was produced using Seedance 2.0, an AI film generation tool.

The proof-of-concept narrative follows a U.S. Army pilot who sustains severe injuries after her aircraft is shot down during a mission in Syria. As part of a secretive government program called “Nightborne,” a control implant is surgically inserted into her brainstem, effectively transforming her into a mindless zombie under direct command of the U.S. government.

The release has generated significant backlash from audiences and industry observers. Blomkamp, best known for directing District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, positioned this short as a demonstration of current AI filmmaking tool capabilities.

The response has been notably negative, with critics expressing concerns about both the AI-generated content and the broader implications of AI adoption in creative industries. This reaction reflects ongoing debates about the role of artificial intelligence in entertainment and content creation.
