Call of Duty voice chat lobbies turned into ASMR app that takes veterans back to the cacophonies of the MW2 and BO1 days
A new ASMR app has been created that recreates the chaotic voice chat experience of classic Call of Duty lobbies, specifically targeting players nostalgic for the Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops 1 era. Developer Mike Wing, who previously created apps like Steam Sale Simulator and Xbox 360 Messenger, uploaded “Call of Duty Ambience” to AppDrop, a platform for independent developers.
The app offers an unconventional take on ASMR content by transforming the noisy, trash-talking environment of competitive online Call of Duty matches into ambient soundscapes designed for relaxation and sleep. Wing humorously described the concept as an alternative to traditional white noise, noting that rather than falling asleep to calming sounds, he falls asleep to “grown men arguing in CoD lobbies.”
The project reflects the enduring cultural resonance of Call of Duty’s competitive online community from its early years, when voice chat lobbies were notorious for intense trash-talking and heated arguments. These now-classic gaming environments have become nostalgic touchstones for veterans of that era.
The ASMR market has expanded significantly in recent years, incorporating increasingly unconventional soundscapes and experiences beyond traditional calming content. By packaging the deliberately chaotic atmosphere of iconic gaming lobbies as relaxation content, Wing’s app taps into both gaming nostalgia and the ASMR trend’s appetite for unexpected audio experiences.
