“The Gears of War trilogy was largely developed hungover by me” - Cliff Bleszinski reckons with a difficult past while plotting a return to games and a brighter future

Cliff Bleszinski, the legendary designer behind the Gears of War trilogy and Unreal Tournament, has opened up about a lifelong struggle with alcoholism that shaped his career trajectory. Now 51 and four months sober, Bleszinski traced his drinking habit back to 2003 during an Unreal Tournament press tour, when he was handed a bottle of vodka. He described how the games industry’s culture of heavy drinking normalized and encouraged his escalating consumption.

Bleszinski acknowledges that alcohol significantly impacted his most celebrated work. The Gears of War trilogy, which defined him as a designer, was largely developed while he was hungover. His drinking progressed from a “functioning alcoholic” state to non-functioning, ultimately contributing to the collapse of his independent studio, Boss Key Productions. The studio’s hero shooter LawBreakers and battle royale Radical Heights both failed commercially, with Bleszinski taking primary responsibility for those failures.

The turning point came in March 2026, when Bleszinski suffered a drinking-related seizure. This health crisis prompted him to seek recovery, and he is now focusing on his sobriety and health. Despite his struggles, Bleszinski remains optimistic about his future in game development, hinting at a potential return to creating games.

His candid recounting, shared in an interview with 80 Level, sheds light on the personal costs of the games industry’s work culture and substance abuse issues. Bleszinski’s story serves as both a cautionary tale about addiction in a high-pressure creative industry and a narrative of personal recovery and potential redemption.
