Final Fantasy 14’s attempt to take the MMO mobile is over before the world even gets the chance to see it
Final Fantasy 14’s mobile adaptation is shutting down less than a year and a half after its China launch, taking its unreleased global version with it. Developed in partnership with LightSpeed Studios—the team behind PUBG Mobile—the mobile MMO was announced in November 2024 with Square Enix handing development duties to the experienced mobile publisher.
Unlike a direct port of the PC version, the mobile adaptation offered a tailored experience with story content limited to A Realm Reborn, the base game concluding at Patch 2.0, rather than including the full expansion content available on other platforms. This streamlined approach was likely intended to create a more accessible mobile experience.
The shutdown represents a significant setback for Square Enix’s ambitions to bring the critically acclaimed MMORPG to mobile players. Despite Final Fantasy 14’s thriving audience on PC and console, the mobile adaptation failed to gain sufficient traction. Players in China who experienced the game during its run will lose access, while the global audience awaiting an international release will never have the opportunity to try the adapted version. The closure adds to ongoing discussions about live-service game longevity, particularly when established franchises venture into new platforms.
