UK games retailer Game entered administration owing £16m, thanks to fierce competition, consumer trends, and “uncertainty associated with Brexit”
UK video game retailer Game has entered administration, owing £15.8 million, marking another chapter in the high street retailer’s long-running financial troubles. According to a report by administrators KR8 Advisory, the company’s collapse was driven by a combination of factors: changing consumer behavior, fierce competition in the retail sector, and uncertainty associated with Brexit.
Game, which is owned by Frasers Group, filed notice of intention to appoint administrators and employed law firm RPC to oversee a 10-day creditor protection period while the company considers its options. The administrators were assigned in April following the February filing, as the retailer proved unable to meet its debt obligations.
The collapse represents the latest setback for a retailer that has faced years of business challenges as the gaming industry’s distribution landscape has shifted dramatically, with digital sales increasingly replacing physical retail purchases. Whether Game can recover from administration or what restructuring might look like remains unclear at this stage.
