Meet GigaWiper, a tricksy new malware that can wipe your PC’s storage drives squeaky clean and spy on your desktop all at once

Microsoft has identified GigaWiper, a newly discovered malware that combines destructive and espionage capabilities into a single multi-purpose threat targeting Windows systems. According to Microsoft’s analysis published recently, GigaWiper represents a particularly dangerous threat due to its dual functionality: the ability to completely wipe PC storage drives and simultaneously conduct surveillance on infected systems.

The malware’s most severe capability is its capacity to destroy data at the physical disk level by overwriting raw disk content, potentially rendering entire drives unusable and unrecoverable. Beyond its destructive functions, GigaWiper also operates as spyware, allowing attackers to monitor desktop activity and gather information from compromised machines.

Notably, GigaWiper appears to be a composite threat, assembled from multiple existing malware families that have been stitched together to create a more powerful and versatile tool. This combination approach gives the malware both wiping and reconnaissance capabilities in a single package. The threat is particularly concerning for users running single-SSD configurations, who face significant risk of total data loss with no backup redundancy. Security researchers have flagged GigaWiper as an emerging risk that users and organizations should monitor closely.
