Marvel Studios Boss Kevin Feige Feels Like a ‘Gigantic Loser and Failure’ Over Doomed Blade Reboot With Mahershala Ali

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has expressed frustration over the stalled Blade reboot, admitting he feels like “a gigantic loser and failure” that the project never got off the ground. Originally announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the film was set to star Mahershala Ali as the vampire hunter, reviving the character previously portrayed by Wesley Snipes. Despite fan enthusiasm and Ali’s own interest in the role, seven years have passed without the film moving forward.

The delays stem from significant creative struggles behind the scenes. Feige revealed that Blade’s screenplay has gone through three to four different versions, with the story constantly being reconceived. The production faced the challenge of determining the film’s setting—landing on a modern-day approach—but this foundational decision came only after years of development turmoil. The repeated script rewrites and creative resets have effectively stalled what was meant to be a major addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 lineup.

Feige’s candid comments to the Happy Sad Confused podcast reflect the difficulties Marvel Studios has faced in translating its ambitious announcement to actual production. What was presented as an exciting future project alongside other 2019 reveals like Black Widow, Loki, and Eternals has become a notable black mark for the studio. With no official cancellation announced, the Blade project appears effectively abandoned, representing one of Marvel’s most visible development failures in recent years.
