GameSpot’s Exclusive Magic: The Gathering – The Hobbit Cards Turn Death Into An Opportunity

Magic: The Gathering has announced The Hobbit as its next expansion, marking a return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s universe within the trading card game. The set was unveiled at MagicCon Amsterdam and is currently in preview season ahead of its August release.

As part of the card reveal cycle, GameSpot has exclusively unveiled two new Rare cards from the set. The first is Part In Friendship, a green enchantment costing four generic and one green mana. Its ability triggers whenever a nontoken creature you control dies, prompting you to reveal cards from the top of your library until meeting a specific condition—providing potential value to sacrifice-based strategies.

The second exclusive card is a creature designed to support mill strategies, a mechanic centered on forcing opponents to place cards from their deck into their graveyard. This card is expected to be relevant across multiple Magic formats.

With preview season underway, additional cards and mechanics from The Hobbit expansion will continue to be revealed in the coming weeks before the August launch. This expansion represents a significant intellectual property crossover for Magic: The Gathering, bringing one of fiction’s most beloved fantasy worlds into the game’s growing collection of licensed settings.
