Marathon’s Rescue Mission Begins with This New Roguelite Mode, Playable Solo or Co-Op on PS5

Marathon, Bungie’s free-to-play FPS, is launching a new roguelite mode called “Return to the Cryo Archive” in a bid to revitalize the struggling title. Despite receiving critical acclaim as a superb first-person shooter, Marathon has failed to build a meaningful player base, with negligible sales on PS5 and declining numbers on Steam, where it has been its most popular platform.

The new roguelite mode, playable in both solo and cooperative multiplayer formats, represents Bungie’s attempt to broaden the game’s appeal beyond its core FPS audience. By introducing roguelite mechanics with procedurally-generated elements, the developer hopes to provide fresh, replayable content that might retain existing players while attracting new ones.

Marathon’s commercial underperformance has been particularly disappointing given the game’s positive critical reception. The gap between critical praise and commercial success underscores the challenges facing live-service games in an increasingly crowded market, even when backed by an established studio. The introduction of genre-hybrid content like roguelite gameplay suggests Bungie is willing to experiment with new gameplay formats to reverse the title’s fortunes.
