Microsoft just pulled a Sony: The tech giant will get rid of your AI-created podcasts and won’t let you save them
Microsoft is discontinuing its Copilot Podcasts feature on August 18, 2026, permanently eliminating user access to all AI-generated podcast content. The company has stated it will not provide any option for users to export, download, or save their previously created podcasts.
Copilot Podcasts allowed users to generate audio content on suggested topics, which they could listen to through Copilot’s web platform and dedicated iOS and Android mobile applications. Users now have less than one month to listen to their existing podcast content before the feature is shut down entirely.
The decision has drawn criticism and comparisons to Sony’s controversial approach to digital content management. Consumer advocates argue that the lack of export functionality raises important questions about user rights and digital content preservation, particularly for content created through AI tools on cloud-based platforms.
Microsoft has not publicly announced plans to provide alternatives or workarounds for users wanting to preserve their podcast libraries. This represents a shift in how companies are handling user-generated AI content as these features continue to evolve.
