It’s probably time to update 7-Zip as the app has just been patched to fix a pretty big vulnerability
7-Zip users should update to version 26.02 or later to patch a significant security vulnerability. The file compression tool does not auto-update, so users must manually download and install the new version from 7-Zip’s official website. To verify your current version, check Help > About 7-Zip in the application.
The vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected systems. According to the Zero Day Initiative, exploitation requires user interaction—specifically that the target opens a malicious file or visits a malicious webpage. The flaw exists in the application’s processing of XZ chunked data, and attackers can craft specially designed XZ-compressed files to trigger the exploit.
Given that 7-Zip is a widely used compression utility across multiple platforms, users with sensitive data or system access should prioritize updating immediately. The vulnerability represents a meaningful security risk in the current threat landscape, though the requirement for user action means no immediate automatic compromise is possible.
