Darkest Dungeon is getting its first dollop of DLC in several years, as the gloomy old RPG celebrates its 10th birthday

Red Hook Studios has announced new DLC for the original Darkest Dungeon, marking the game’s first major content update in six years and its 10th anniversary. The DLC, titled The Fire’s Edge, will launch in August and bring two hero classes from the sequel: the Duelist and the Runaway.

The Duelist functions as a complex damage dealer that moves freely between party positions while alternating between aggressive and defensive combat stances. The Runaway serves as a position-flexible damage dealer that introduces the Burn mechanic to the original game, with particular synergy for teams utilizing Stuns and Pull/Knockback/Shuffle effects.

Beyond the new heroes, The Fire’s Edge will add new Trinket mechanics and three new districts to explore in the hamlet. The last DLC for the original Darkest Dungeon released in May 2020, making this a significant return to the game after six years of silence. While Red Hook Studios released Darkest Dungeon 2 in 2023 to generally positive reviews and has continued supporting it with updates, the developer’s decision to return to the original game may reflect its enduring popularity and the community’s preference for certain aspects of the first game compared to its sequel.

This follows a recent trend of major games receiving substantial updates years after their initial release, comparable to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt receiving new content long after launch.
