Final Fantasy 14 used FF11’s infamous boss to aura farm
Final Fantasy 14 recently featured Final Fantasy 11’s most notorious boss, Absolute Virtue, in the Echoes of Vana’diel raid series. The encounter appears in “Windurst: The Third Walk,” the final chapter of the FF11-inspired alliance raids, but makes only a brief appearance before being swiftly defeated by another boss.
Absolute Virtue is legendary in FF11 for encounters that could last up to 30 hours. The boss remained considered undefeatable for three years before Square Enix provided players with combat tips and eventually nerfed the fight entirely. Its reputation as one of gaming’s most punishing encounters is well-established among MMORPG veterans.
In FF14, the appearance was strategically designed to establish the formidable power of Shantotto, who serves as The Third Walk’s first major boss. Battle content designer Masayoshi Ishikawa explained that featuring Absolute Virtue’s swift demise helped demonstrate Shantotto’s strength to players. This design choice creates a memorable callback for players familiar with FF11’s legacy while introducing The Third Walk’s primary antagonist.
The moment exemplifies the fan service that the Echoes of Vana’diel series has become known for, blending FF11 nostalgia with FF14’s modern raid design. By incorporating elements from the predecessor MMO, Square Enix honors Final Fantasy 11’s enduring legacy while continuing to develop its thriving live-service title.
