Xbox Paid More Than Stalker 2’s Development Cost To Make It Exclusive
Microsoft paid GSC Game World more than the full development cost of Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl to secure it as a timed exclusive on Xbox, effectively guaranteeing the game financially before launch.
In discussing the platform exclusivity decision, studio founder Sergiy Grygorovych acknowledged the competitive landscape between Sony and Microsoft, noting that the console makers are “at war” for player attention. He highlighted Microsoft’s financial capacity, stemming from its strong stock market performance, which enabled the company to invest heavily in securing key gaming titles.
The deal structure ensured that GSC Game World would recoup more than their entire development budget through the exclusivity agreement alone, securing the studio’s financial stability regardless of the game’s commercial performance. While Grygorovych declined to disclose specific financial figures, he confirmed that the arrangement was substantially favorable to the studio.
Stalker 2 launched in 2024 and became a commercial success. This type of exclusivity deal—where platform holders pay developers more than production costs to secure launch exclusivity—represents a significant industry trend among major console manufacturers competing for exclusive content. For independent studios like GSC Game World, such partnerships provide substantial financial security and development backing.
