Microsoft Whiteboard is not shutting down, but you still may lose access next month

Microsoft Whiteboard is not being discontinued, but the app will soon become inaccessible to personal Microsoft account users. Starting August 22, 2026, the application will require a Microsoft Business account to continue creating and editing whiteboards. Personal account users will have a limited grace period until September 5, 2026, during which they can view their existing content and export it for backup, but cannot create new whiteboards or make edits.

Microsoft is implementing this change as part of a broader transition that moves Whiteboard’s storage backend from personal cloud storage to OneDrive for Business. This architectural shift enables new features and improvements to the application, though it comes at the cost of excluding non-business users from the platform. After the September 5 deadline, all content associated with personal accounts will be permanently deleted from Microsoft’s servers.

The move reflects Microsoft’s strategic focus on enterprise and business-oriented services. Users relying on Whiteboard for personal use will need to find alternative digital whiteboarding solutions, as they will no longer have access to the platform regardless of whether they created content on personal or business accounts.
