Unity demonstrates ‘an Unreal character running through a Unity world’ for the first time
Unity and Epic Games have demonstrated a significant technical achievement: a Unity game rendering natively within Unreal Engine. The demonstration was unveiled at the Unite Seoul keynote, marking progress toward Epic CEO Tim Sweeney’s vision of an interconnected gaming ecosystem where different engines can work together seamlessly.
The collaboration between the two major game engine providers aims to enable Unity developers to publish their games within Fortnite, Epic’s massively popular online platform. This cross-engine capability represents a notable shift in industry approach, moving away from siloed engine ecosystems toward greater interoperability.
James Stone, Unity’s senior director of technical product management, led the demonstration, showcasing what the company described as the first instance of a Unity game rendering natively in Unreal Engine. The achievement came alongside the announcement of the next version of the Unity Engine.
This partnership reflects a broader industry trend toward collaboration and platform accessibility, allowing developers using Unity to reach new audiences through Fortnite’s existing player base. The technical integration demonstrates advanced work in cross-engine compatibility, a challenge that has historically been a barrier to such collaboration.
