XBOX Faces New Legal Complaint From Bethesda Workers’ Union

The Bethesda Game Studios Union has filed a legal complaint against Bethesda for allegedly violating Canadian labor laws. The complaint stems from the termination of Montreal-based staff on July 17, 2026—coinciding with Xbox’s announcement of major Fallout projects including Fallout 5 in pre-production, Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters, and Obsidian Entertainment’s new Fallout game in development.

According to the union statement, affected Montreal workers received termination notices despite being previously informed they would retain their positions until September. The union alleges that workers were offered the “smallest severance legally possible” without collective bargaining, and that health insurance coverage was terminated immediately. The timing of the dual announcements raised questions about whether the Fallout news was strategically released to overshadow negative labor developments.

This action represents part of a broader wave of cuts within Xbox and Microsoft, with the company having eliminated 3,200 positions and restructured multiple studios in recent months. The union’s complaint emphasizes the disparity in treatment between Montreal workers and other affected staff, and questions the legality of the termination process under Canadian employment regulations.
