Call Of Duty Is Introducing A New “Classic” Matchmaking System In Season 5

Activision is updating Call of Duty: Black Ops 7’s multiplayer matchmaking system in Season 5, launching July 23. The publisher is introducing a new matchmaking system inspired by classic Call of Duty games, responding to community enthusiasm around the recent re-releases of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The matchmaking changes will affect three playlists: Black Ops Classic, Quick Play, and Party Games. Previously, Black Ops 7 featured “Open” playlists designed with minimal skill-based matchmaking (SBMM), intended to emulate the matchmaking of older Call of Duty titles. The new classic-inspired system represents Activision’s continued effort to balance community desire for more casual, less skill-focused matchmaking.

Activision stated it has “continued to learn a lot about multiplayer matchmaking through player data and community feedback,” citing positive reception to the classic game remasters as a key driver for the changes. The publisher confirmed it will continue to offer Open playlists alongside the newly updated modes, maintaining options for different player preferences.
