Dear Frosthaven boardgame players complaining the PC tactics RPG adaptation is bugged: the devs say it’s likely you’ve “played it wrong”
Frosthaven’s digital PC adaptation has sparked controversy between players and developers over reported bugs. Players complaining about issues in the tactics RPG version of the complex boardgame have received pushback from developers, who suggest that many of the perceived bugs may actually stem from players misinterpreting or misapplying the game’s dense ruleset.
Frosthaven and its predecessor Gloomhaven are notoriously intricate turn-based tactical boardgames, featuring extensive rules, scenario descriptions, and special conditions across multiple rulebooks. The physical board game is so component-heavy it weighs 36 pounds—about 5 pounds more than a Lego Titanic set.
One of the primary advantages of the digital adaptation is eliminating the need to manage these cumbersome physical components during multiplayer sessions. Players can simply launch the game online and hop into servers with friends, with turns resolving faster since calculations are automated. However, this convenience appears to have created a disconnect: some players may not be fully acquainted with Frosthaven’s intricate rule mechanics, leading to confusion about whether their negative experiences represent genuine bugs or misplayed scenarios. The developer’s suggestion that players “played it wrong” implies that clearer communication about rules or better in-game tutorials might be needed to bridge this gap.
