Games for Change report aims to ground parental gaming concerns in “evidence rather than fear”

Games for Change, a non-profit organization, has released a white paper titled “What Families Need to Know About Video Games and Well-Being” aimed at reframing parental perspectives on gaming. Authored by research director Dr Rachel Kowert and supported by Tencent, the report seeks to address how parents engage with their children’s gaming habits while moving away from fear-based narratives around addiction, violence, and excessive screen time.

The white paper represents an effort to ground parental concerns in scientific evidence rather than unfounded fears. According to Kowert, the goal is not to dismiss parents’ worries entirely, but to provide them with factual information that allows for more informed, positive engagement with children who play video games.

The report arrives as gaming continues to be a major part of how families spend time together, with research increasingly showing nuanced impacts on child development and well-being.
