Star Trek Legend William Shatner and His Daughter Melanie Reveal They Battled Stage 4 Cancer at the Same Time

William Shatner, the 95-year-old Star Trek legend famous for portraying Captain James T. Kirk, and his daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch, 61, have revealed they simultaneously battled stage 4 cancer and supported each other through their treatment journeys.

Melanie underwent chemotherapy to treat stage 4 breast cancer, while William Shatner was diagnosed in June 2023 with stage 4 malignant melanoma that had metastasized to his lungs and brain. The actor underwent surgery to remove the tumor on his face, followed by two years of immunotherapy to address the cancer in his lungs and brain.

Both have now been declared cancer-free as of late 2024. The simultaneous diagnoses and treatment experiences created a unique bond during their respective health battles, with each providing emotional support to the other throughout the process.
