Steam update makes gifting much easier, adds wishlist organization features

Valve has significantly streamlined Steam’s gifting system while introducing new wishlist organization capabilities.

The most substantial change removes account barriers—users can now send games to anyone via email address alone. Recipients no longer require a Steam account or need to be on the sender’s friends list. This expands gift checkout beyond its previous limitation to digital gift cards and hardware, making game gifting accessible to guests without accounts. The system also enables users to select gifts directly from recipients’ shared wishlists, simplifying the gift-purchasing experience.

In parallel, Steam is introducing category organization to wishlists. Valve noted that users increasingly wishlist significant numbers of titles, and these new categories aim to help players manage their expanding collections. This feature addresses a long-standing community request for better wishlist organization, particularly useful for those who maintain hundreds or thousands of games they plan to purchase during sales events.

Together, these updates reflect Valve’s commitment to improving Steam’s social and discovery features. By reducing friction in the gift-giving process and providing organizational tools for wishlists, the changes encourage both spending and community engagement—key objectives in maintaining Steam’s market position as the primary digital game storefront.
