US PS5 Sales Down Almost 20% Year-Over-Year, Rounds Out Tough Month for Industry

The US games industry faced a challenging June 2026, with PlayStation 5 hardware sales declining nearly 20% year-over-year amid broader market headwinds. The overall industry contracted 21% compared to June 2025, a decline largely anticipated due to the exceptional baseline created by the Nintendo Switch 2’s record-breaking launch in the prior year.

Switch 2 itself experienced a steep 79% year-over-year sales decline in June 2026, a natural consequence of the elevated sales activity that surrounded its debut in June 2025. This pattern is typical in the console hardware market, where major platform launches drive elevated sales in their initial months before normalizing.

Despite the difficult month for hardware sales, some software titles bucked the trend. Meccha Chameleon stood out as a notable performer, demonstrating significant strength relative to the broader market downturn and providing a bright spot for the software segment.

The June results highlight the cyclical nature of the console market, where major platform launches create significant year-over-year comparisons that can obscure underlying trends. While the absolute declines appear substantial, they largely reflect the expected normalization following the exceptional performance driven by the Switch 2’s initial market entry.
