Feature: Hands On with Xbox Back-Compat for PC - a New Initiative That Begins with Four Classic Games

Microsoft has launched Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC, bringing original Xbox games to Windows and compatible handhelds for the first time. The program launched in early preview on July 22, 2026, with four classic titles: Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy.

Players can purchase the games individually or access them through Xbox Game Pass for PC (or Game Pass Ultimate). Existing digital console licenses automatically transfer to PC, and the games are also playable via Xbox Cloud Gaming. The initiative represents a significant step in game preservation, allowing players to access their gaming library across platforms.

The backward-compatible releases include several enhancements, such as up to 4x resolution upscaling, customizable graphics settings including anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing, and VSync support. The games have modest system requirements, with minimum specs including a 4-core Intel Core i3-8100 processor and GPUs like the Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, or Intel Arc A310, making them accessible to a wide range of PCs and handhelds.

Microsoft has indicated this is just the beginning of its backward compatibility efforts on PC, with more original Xbox titles expected to arrive. Additionally, the company plans to add achievements to select original Xbox games later this year, including the four launch titles—a long-requested feature since original Xbox games have previously lacked achievement support on the console backward compatibility program.
