New post-apocalyptic Gundam anime announced at Comic-Con
Bandai Namco Filmworks has announced Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a new anime in the Gundam franchise set for 2027 release. The announcement came at San Diego Comic-Con and introduces a fresh continuity within the Gundam universe called “After Apocalypse.”
The anime is helmed by acclaimed director Kenji Kamiyama, whose previous credits include Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, and The Ninth Jedi from Star Wars: Visions. Novelist Toh EnJoe, known for Self-Reference Engine and Harlequin Butterfly, has contributed to worldbuilding for the new universe.
The After Apocalypse continuity will expand across multiple media, with the anime interconnected to the recently announced video game Gundam Rogue Orbit. This transmedia approach aims to deepen the franchise’s narrative scope and provide fans with multiple entry points into the post-apocalyptic setting.
