HBO’s new superhero show from the creator of Watchmen officially arrives in 3 weeks

HBO is launching “Lanterns,” a new superhero series in three weeks, marking the next major entry in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The neo-Western drama centers on the Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart, portrayed by Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre respectively.

The series is created by an accomplished creative team: Damon Lindelof, the showrunner behind “Lost,” “The Leftovers,” and the Emmy-winning “Watchmen” miniseries; Chris Mundy, showrunner of “Ozark”; and Tom King, an Eisner Award-winning comic book writer known for works like “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” and “Mister Miracle.” The trio collaborated on writing the pilot, with Mundy serving as showrunner.

This project represents Lindelof’s return to the superhero genre following his acclaimed 2019 “Watchmen” adaptation, which he described as a blend between a “remix” and continuation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ seminal graphic novel. “Lanterns” continues his approach of interweaving mystery narratives with superhero storytelling, now in partnership with two other prestige television and comics creators.
