Shigeru Miyamoto “Not Really Thinking About” Directing Another Game

Legendary video game director Shigeru Miyamoto has stated he is “not really thinking about” directing another game in the near future. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Miyamoto acknowledged the significant challenges of modern game development, noting that contemporary projects often require the coordination of approximately 200 people—a scale he finds daunting.

However, Miyamoto has not entirely closed the door on future directorial projects. He emphasized that circumstances could change, suggesting that if an appropriately compelling project were to emerge, he might reconsider his current stance. He pointed to his involvement with Pikmin Bloom as evidence of his continued willingness to engage in new creative ventures, even if they fall outside his traditional game direction role.

The comments provide insight into the realities of contemporary game development, where the scale and complexity of projects have grown substantially. Miyamoto’s cautious approach reflects both the demanding nature of leading large development teams and his selective interest in future projects. At this stage of his career, rather than actively pursuing directorial roles, Miyamoto appears focused on other aspects of the creative process and exploring diverse project opportunities.
