As layoff controversy continues, Rockstar union has ‘more members than ever before’, meaning it could force mandatory recognition
The Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU), formed earlier this year in response to Rockstar Games’ controversial layoffs during Grand Theft Auto 6 development, has grown to record membership levels. According to People Make Games, the union now has “more members than ever before.”
The RGWU is requesting voluntary recognition from Rockstar Games as an official bargaining representative. Should the company refuse, the union can pursue statutory recognition—a legal process that could force Rockstar to formally recognize and negotiate with the union. This mandatory recognition pathway is only now available due to the RGWU meeting the membership threshold required by law.
If the RGWU achieves recognition, it would become the second video game industry union and by a substantial margin the largest gaming sector union to date. This development reflects growing momentum in game development labor organizing, as workers increasingly organize around concerns including layoffs, working conditions, and job security. The outcome of this recognition process could have implications for unionization efforts throughout the gaming industry.
