Marvel’s Wolverine Gets Prequel Comic, Introduces Team X
Insomniac Games and Marvel have released a prequel comic for the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine, offering players an introduction to Team X and backstory ahead of the game’s launch. The comic, written by Insomniac’s Narrative Director Walt Williams, is available digitally on Marvel Unlimited, with physical copies distributed at the developer’s booth during San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
The prequel establishes that Wolverine leads Team X—a task force consisting of Sabretooth, Mystique, and Sunfire—on covert operations. According to the game’s synopsis, Wolverine departed from the team three years before the game’s events but reunites with them during the main narrative. The comic provides context for this reunion by depicting Team X on a mission to infiltrate a facility.
A significant plot twist emerges from the comic’s revelations. While marketing materials prominently feature anti-mutant scientist Bolivar Trask as the apparent main antagonist, the prequel comic suggests a deeper conspiracy. Wolverine is shown receiving orders from Nathaniel Essex, identified as Team X’s true leader, hinting that Essex—a classic X-Men villain—may play a more central role in the game’s story than Trask. This twist suggests the game may subvert player expectations regarding its primary villain.
The release of the prequel comic coincides with Insomniac Games’ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where the studio is holding a panel to discuss the upcoming game. The comic serves as a bridge between existing X-Men lore and the game’s unique narrative, allowing players to familiarize themselves with Team X’s composition and dynamics before experiencing the full story in-game.
