Xbox Is Adding A New Feature To ‘Optimise’ Download Speeds For Games
Microsoft is testing a new smart download client designed to optimize game installation and update speeds on Xbox platforms. Beginning July 23, members of the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring in the Xbox Insider Program started testing the feature, which addresses a long-standing frustration for Xbox users across console and PC.
Users have historically experienced inconsistent download speeds that often fall short of their actual internet service provider speeds, particularly on Xbox Series X|S and older consoles. The new download client aims to close this performance gap by improving Xbox’s download logic across its gaming network, providing speeds closer to what users are actually paying for.
The feature will apply to both Xbox Series X|S and older Xbox consoles, as well as Xbox on PC. Microsoft’s optimization effort follows Steam’s established approach of providing transparent download metrics within its platform. By refining the download infrastructure, Xbox aims to bring consistency and reliability to game installation and update processes that have long underperformed relative to users’ internet speeds.
The testing phase through the Xbox Insider Program will help Microsoft refine the feature before a wider rollout, potentially improving the experience for millions of Xbox players worldwide.
