I spoke with the developer behind Endstate, a new app that fixes one of the worst parts of setting up a fresh Windows PC

Endstate, a new open-source application, addresses a significant limitation in Windows setup workflows. While tools like WinGet and Chocolatey can quickly reinstall applications on a fresh Windows installation, they do not restore user-specific settings and preferences that have accumulated over time.

Endstate bridges this gap by automating both application reinstallation and settings restoration, streamlining the entire process of setting up a new PC or recovering after a Windows reinstall. The tool is particularly valuable for Windows power users, PC builders, and system administrators who frequently perform clean installations or need to standardize multiple systems.

The application is distributed as free, open-source software available through GitHub, making it accessible to anyone without licensing costs. Currently exclusive to Windows, the developer plans to add Linux and macOS support in the future, potentially extending the tool’s utility across different operating systems.

By consolidating application recovery and preference restoration into a single workflow, Endstate significantly reduces the manual effort and time required to return a PC to a productive state compared to traditional approaches of individually reinstalling and reconfiguring each application.
