Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Director Is Pushing for a Physical Edition, But Nothing Has Been Decided

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s physical release status remains uncertain despite director Naoki Hamaguchi’s push for a disc edition. Speaking at the Final Fantasy 14 Berlin Fan Fest, Hamaguchi told GamesRadar+ that Square Enix is “still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be,” preventing him from making any definitive commitments about a physical release.

The uncertainty stems partly from Sony’s recent announcement that it will cease producing physical PlayStation discs in 2028. While Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is scheduled for Spring 2027—well before that deadline—the decision about whether to release a physical version involves more than just technical feasibility. Square Enix is weighing options alongside other business considerations.

Despite the lack of confirmation, Hamaguchi made clear that he personally supports a physical edition. “I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition,” he said, indicating his advocacy within the company. However, his individual preference doesn’t guarantee the final decision will align with fan demand, which has remained consistent across the gaming community.

The ongoing discussions reflect broader industry trends, as major publishers increasingly shift toward digital-only releases. With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation arriving in 2027—one of the year’s most anticipated RPG releases—the decision could influence how other major titles approach their distribution strategies.
