Yoshi-P is looking into ways to make FF14’s 5 expansions and hundreds of hours less daunting for new players

Final Fantasy 14 requires hundreds of hours to complete its main story across five expansions, with a sixth expansion launching in January 2027. This extensive narrative commitment has made the 13-year-old MMO increasingly difficult to recommend to new players, as Square Enix has previously required players to complete the entire story to access the latest content.

Producer Naoki Yoshida revealed at the Final Fantasy Fan Fest in Berlin that the development team is actively exploring solutions to make the game more accessible to newcomers. Yoshida emphasized his desire for players to enjoy FF14’s acclaimed storytelling and worldbuilding while having a fresh experience appropriate for new audiences.

The potential changes could mark a significant shift in Square Enix’s approach to mandatory story progression, though the studio has not yet detailed what solutions are being considered. Any fundamental change to the story requirements would likely prove controversial within the existing playerbase, which has valued the cohesive narrative experience. The goal appears to be balancing accessibility for newcomers with maintaining the story experience that long-time players cherish.
