My Hero Academia author returns with new horror manga one-shot
Kohei Horikoshi, the acclaimed author of the long-running superhero manga My Hero Academia, is venturing into unfamiliar territory with his next project. According to Comic Natalie, Horikoshi will publish a new horror manga one-shot titled Don’t Laugh, Shijima-san (Warawanaide yo Shijima-san), described as a “boy-meets-girl horror story.”
The 61-page one-shot will be rendered in full color and published in the 37/38 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, which goes on sale August 10. Based on the magazine’s typical release schedule, the work should become available on the Shonen Jump app the same date, making it accessible to digital readers worldwide.
The shift to horror marks a notable departure from Horikoshi’s signature colorful superhero storytelling that defined My Hero Academia. However, this creative pivot isn’t entirely unexpected. The author has previously indicated an interest in the horror genre—he included horror elements in an April 2022 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, signaling his creative interests extend beyond the superhero domain.
This one-shot represents a significant moment for both Horikoshi and his fanbase, showcasing the artist’s range and willingness to explore different genres. With My Hero Academia having concluded its serialization, the new horror work offers fans and the industry insight into what directions the prolific author might pursue next.
