Keychron announces first open-source firmware for gaming mice
Keychron has announced ZGM, an open-source firmware for gaming mice, marking a significant expansion of the company’s commitment to open-source peripherals. The firmware is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2027 and will initially support the G6 HE hybrid magnetic switch gaming mouse.
ZGM is positioned as the gaming mouse equivalent of established open-source keyboard firmware projects like QMK and ZMK. This development allows users to customize their mice without relying on manufacturer-provided software, addressing a longstanding gap in the gaming peripheral market. The announcement reflects Keychron’s philosophy against “firmware you can’t read, can’t audit, can’t change.”
The G6 HE is designed to compete with Logitech’s X2 SuperStrike, but open-source firmware support represents a distinctive competitive advantage. Keychron has built a reputation over recent years as a proponent of open-source principles in peripherals, operating an Open Source Design Project that provides files for customizing keyboards and utilizing open-source firmware projects in its existing product line.
This move extends Keychron’s open-source advocacy beyond keyboards into the gaming mouse category, potentially influencing broader industry trends toward transparency and user customization.
