The Last of Us multiplayer mod has hit a ‘big milestone’ as it prepares for launch in September

A community modder known as Speclizer is developing a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC, with a planned launch in September 2026. The project fills the void left by Sony’s cancellation of The Last of Us Factions, a standalone multiplayer game that was axed as part of the publisher’s broader withdrawal from live-service titles. The original Last of Us featured well-received multiplayer gameplay, which Factions was designed to expand upon.

After recently hitting a significant development milestone, Speclizer’s mod continues progress toward its September launch. The project began development at the start of 2026 and represents a grassroots effort to preserve the multiplayer experience that players lost when Sony abandoned Factions. With fan enthusiasm remaining strong for this component of the franchise, the community-driven alternative offers PC players an avenue to experience The Last of Us multiplayer gameplay despite the publisher’s official retreat from the game. The approaching release date indicates the modding effort is nearing completion and promises to deliver the experience many players have wanted since Factions’ cancellation.
