RAM prices be damned, SK hynix’s record-breaking $55.6 billion quarter still failed to meet investors’ wild AI expectations

SK hynix, one of the world’s “big three” memory manufacturers, reported record-breaking second quarter 2026 financial results with total revenue of 79.3 trillion won (approximately $55.6 billion). Despite continued strong demand for memory chips from the artificial intelligence industry, the company fell short of investor expectations.

Analysts had forecast SK hynix would reach revenue of 84 trillion won (about $58 billion), making the actual results a significant disappointment for shareholders. The shortfall represents a notable gap between expectations and reality, even amid the sustained boom in AI-driven semiconductor demand.

The primary factor behind the miss was a slowdown in HBM4 (High Bandwidth Memory 4th generation) shipments. Rather than being recorded in the second quarter, revenue from these high-capacity memory chips will now be counted in subsequent quarters. This timing shift, while not representing a fundamental weakness in demand, created the gap between forecast and actual results.

Despite missing investor expectations, the results underscore the broader trend of AI infrastructure driving record demand for advanced memory products. SK hynix’s performance reflects both the opportunities and volatility of the semiconductor market as it adapts to massive AI workload requirements. The company’s ability to still achieve record revenue despite delayed HBM4 recognition demonstrates the overall strength of demand, though the miss suggests investors may be banking on even more aggressive growth trajectories than the company can currently deliver.
