Xbox Promises to Investigate Reports of Service Outage Preventing Players From Accessing Physical Games
Xbox experienced a significant system-wide outage on July 26–27, 2026, lasting nearly 24 hours and disrupting multiple services including player authentication and access to downloaded games. The outage exposed a concerning issue: physical disc-based games also failed to work offline during the service interruption, despite traditionally being playable without an internet connection.
In response, Xbox Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet acknowledged the problem to The Verge, stating that “disc-based entitlement checks should not prevent players from accessing their games, and this is by design.” He explained that while physical game discs are subject to licensing verification (“entitlement checks”), they should remain playable offline regardless of platform connectivity issues. Microsoft confirmed it is investigating the reports and committed to rolling out a fix to prevent similar failures in future outages.
The incident has raised broader questions about digital ownership and consumer control, highlighting how modern gaming licenses—even for physical media—depend on online verification systems. The outage demonstrated that disc ownership may not guarantee offline access in ways that older gaming consoles historically provided, challenging player assumptions about what “owning” a game actually means in the current ecosystem.
