XBOX Revenue Fell 10% In Latest Microsoft Earnings

Microsoft’s latest earnings report, released on July 29, revealed significant declines in Xbox revenue across multiple segments. Xbox content and services revenue fell 10% year-over-year in the fourth quarter, while hardware sales dropped 13%. For the full year, Xbox revenue declined 5% compared to the previous year.

Despite Xbox’s struggles, Microsoft’s overall financial performance remained strong, with total company revenue surging 31.34% year-over-year to $133.75 billion. The company’s cloud business particularly thrived, with cloud revenue reaching $59 billion, demonstrating Microsoft’s successful pivot toward cloud and AI infrastructure.

The Xbox revenue declines coincide with a major strategic reset announced by Xbox head Asha Sharma. The restructuring includes sweeping layoffs across the division and the spinoff of multiple game studios. Compulsion Games, developer of South of Midnight, and Double Fine Productions, creator of Psychonauts, are among the studios undergoing changes as part of this reorganization.

The reset reflects challenges facing the Xbox division as the gaming landscape evolves. While Microsoft continues to invest in cloud gaming and Game Pass services, the decline in both hardware and content revenue suggests Xbox faces headwinds in attracting and retaining players. The studio spinoffs indicate Microsoft may be shifting its development strategy, potentially moving away from direct studio ownership for certain projects.
