Analyst data: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey experiences surge in daily active users following Christopher Nolan film
Christopher Nolan’s film The Odyssey, which launched on July 17, has significantly boosted engagement for Ubisoft’s 2018 video game Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. According to analyst data from Aliena Analytics and Video Game Insights, the game experienced substantial increases in daily active users across all major platforms following the film’s release.
Daily active users grew from approximately 122,000 on the film’s opening day to 233,000 within ten days—a roughly 90% increase in engagement across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox. The surge was particularly pronounced on Xbox, where DAU more than doubled from 36,000 to 84,000.
The timing appears driven by organic audience interest, with minimal official promotion from Ubisoft beyond social media posts connecting the game and film. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is well-positioned to capitalize on this interest, as the RPG specifically recreates major Greek regions and includes numerous locations tied to Homer’s Odyssey. Players can visit Odysseus’ palace and encounter iconic creatures from the epic, including the Cyclops. The 2019 DLC expansion Lost Tales From Greece further deepens this connection by introducing additional mythological creatures and content parodying moments from Homer’s work.
Nolan’s film, on track for a billion-dollar box-office run, has naturally aligned viewer interest with the existing game that mirrors the movie’s ancient Greek setting, demonstrating how cross-media properties can drive audience engagement across different entertainment formats even without coordinated marketing.
