The rumors were true, Dungeons & Dragons’ first ‘Universes Beyond’ crossover will be with World of Warcraft

Wizards of the Coast has announced the first book in Dungeons & Dragons’ new Universes Beyond line, a crossover with World of Warcraft. The announcement came during Gen Con 2026, marking the official launch of D&D’s crossover strategy, which mirrors Magic: The Gathering’s highly profitable Universes Beyond program.

The 256-page D&D World of Warcraft book draws from 22 years of the MMORPG’s history and incorporates content from the 2026 expansion Midnight. This strategy builds on MTG’s proven success: the trading card game generated $1.72 billion in annual revenue in fiscal year 2025, with much of that attributed to Universes Beyond sets featuring franchises like Final Fantasy, Marvel, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

While some dedicated MTG players have expressed frustration with the proliferation of crossovers, the financial results have proven compelling enough for Wizards of the Coast to extend the model to its flagship tabletop RPG. The move represents a formalization of what D&D has been doing informally for decades—the company published Conan adventures in 1984 and crossovers with H.P. Lovecraft and Michael Moorcock properties even earlier, and previously collaborated with Blizzard on Diablo supplements.
